Born in Maturin, Venezuela, Jhonattan Vegas, first picked up the game of golf with a broomstick and a rock. He began playing nine-hole course near his home which was built for oil-camp workers. His skill earned him a scholarship playing golf at the University of Texas, where he graduated with a degree in kinesiology.

Vegas turned professional in 2008 and started playing the Nationwide Tour in 2009. He represented Venezuela in the 2009 Omega Mission Hills World Cup where he finished tied for 12th place. At the end of the 2010 season, Vegas became the first Venezuelan to earn a PGA Tour card for the 2011 season. After some ups and downs, Vegas was able to earn his third career PGA Tour win at the 2017 RBC Canadian Open.
