At the end of August into the beginning of September, we competed in our zone championship in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. When we play in Puerto Rico, we usually play in either in San Juan or Caguas, so a change in venue was something new. It was very hot and very humid as we started practice in preparation for the start of the tournament. We started off very strong, beating Trinidad and Tobago, Costa Rica, and Cuba to finish first in our pool. A first place finish gave us a bye past the quarter finals, straight into the semi finals where we matched up against Puerto Rico. The winner of this match would go onto the finals and more importantly qualify for the World Cup in November. The World Cup is the first opportunity we will have to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England. We ended up winning 3-0 against Puerto Rico and achieving our goal. In the final we ended up playing Cuba again and losing a close match 2-3. All in all we did what we set out to do which was qualifying. I know the rest of the guys will be eager to play Cuba again as we do not like losing to them at all.
I am gearing up for another year overseas. Should be another interesting and fun adventure. I am looking forward to playing in a new place and competing with new players. I hope I can add value to the team and create some success.
