The Planet Wave—Are Runners Real Athletes?
by Bob "Wish" Wischnia on June 27, 2012
If you’re at all like me, your identity is wrapped up in what we do. We run and we’re runners. I’m a dad, husband, college graduate, a semi-successful professional, but what I am more than anything else is simply this: I’m a runner. That’s how I think of myself and, for better or worse, that’s who I am. The Runner. You probably are too. You are also probably great at all those intangibles qualities we share such as persistence, goal setting and consistency. We can set a fall marathon as our goal, train through the summer heat and think nothing...
The Planet Wave—I Find The Marathon’s True Meaning
by Bob "Wish" Wischnia on May 30, 2012
You might find this hard to believe, but I actually have a friend who doesn’t run. Whenever I see him after finishing yet another marathon, invariably the first thing he asks is: “Why do you do those stupid things? Aren’t they hard?”Well, of course, running a marathon is hard. I’ve run plenty and I’ve never run one that wasn’t hard. I think that’s the point. But what’s even harder than running a marathon, is not running one. If you don’t believe me, try standing on the sidelines of a marathon that you have poi...
The Planet Wave: It’s Time For Change At The Boston Marathon
by Bob "Wish" Wischnia on April 27, 2012
For an American runner, the Boston Marathon is the Holy Grail of our sport. Boston is the one marathon nearly every runner dreams of running in someday. It’s inarguable that Boston is the greatest road race in the world. It’s the oldest marathon in the U.S. and the one with the most traditional, history-laden course and has the most rabid, wildly enthusiastic crowds who treat the race with the reverence it so rich...
The Planet Wave: Lessons Learned - What a Stud Taught a Pud
by Bob "Wish" Wischnia on March 16, 2012
I consider myself a very lucky guy. Over the years, I’ve been lucky enough to run with some of the world’s greatest runners from Olympic gold medalist icons like Herb Elliott and Rosa Mota to American heroes such as Bill Rodgers, Meb Keflezighi, Steve Scott and Alberto Salazar. I’ve learned something from every one of them. But there’s one great runner who has always stood out for me: That man is Rob de Castella. If you’re a relative newcomer to running, that name might not mean much to you. But de Castella—Deek--is an Aussie, who at one point in th...
The Planet Wave: Trials and Tribulations of Race Photos
by Bob "Wish" Wischnia on February 16, 2012
I am not one of those racers who has a lot of fears. But the one aspect of road racing that absolutely terrifies me is the post-race email from the race photo company that appears in the inbox a few days after the race with a link to all sorts of mid-race and finish photos. I dread that seemingly innocuous email so much that I always hesitate before opening it.Clinically, the fear of having your photo taken is called camera phobia (seriously), but I don’t actually mind getting my picture taken. It’s the result that makes me open the email with such trepidation.Let ...
