London Recap
by Patrick Rizzo on May 10, 2013
By now I'm sure anyone who wanted to see the London Marathon results, has done so. I wound up 12th place in a 2:16. Not my best.I knew mother nature has not treated me well, but we really have made the relationship work. I moved some workouts during the buildup to different locations or in some cases, to different days. It was a new challenge every week. One day, it was 75 and sunny; the next (usually my workout or long run day) it would snow. In fact, I just read this week that every month from October through April (and already for May!) set new records for snowfall in Boulder ...
Spring Training
by Patrick Rizzo on April 9, 2013
There are months at a time where I swear my biggest nemesis is the weather. Overall, Boulder has excellent weather year-round. Our winters are mild; our summers are sunny and dry; spring and fall are short but beautiful! I really can't complain as this has spoiled me since leaving the midwest 3 years ago. This training buildup has been a real weird one. I haven't been able to get my long runs in as hard as I want and my longer workouts keep getting cut short due to lack of dry pavement (non-icy pavement really) for any real distance. Until last week, I had only done one workou...
Small Things
by Patrick Rizzo on February 19, 2013
Training blocks where everything goes great are often the least valuable in the long term. We distance runners tend to then think that we finally know it all. We finally know the silver bullet that kills the running beast! GREAT!More often than not though, that great training block was a bi-product of all of the lessons of the bad ones coming together in perfect harmony. We just don't want to admit that we needed “the bad times.” My last training block was one of those infamously bad buildups. I was trying to work on some speedwork, but would run 10 mile tempos at fas...
Comfort Zones
by Patrick Rizzo on December 20, 2012
You probably think that running professionally would entail a constant pushing of the envelope. In many ways it does. Marathon running is entirely different from other distances. To be successful in the marathon, one must be incredibly in-tune with his/her body. It's a constant evaluation of all systems. “How's my fueling? How's my pace? Any aches and pains yet? What is the next 5k stretch like? Am I set up right for where I want to be on that stretch?”In a way, it keeps the runner in a protected little bubble of a comfort zone. The first 30k is really spent I...
Winter Running Tips
by Patrick Rizzo on December 4, 2012
It's that wonderful time of year again, WINTER! Okay, so really I'm not that enthused with the winter at all. It means slick surfaces, dark runs (morning AND night), and cold temperatures accompanied by tight muscles.Don't worry, this isn't a blog to complain about the weather. Winter weather is not a downer at all. It just means we have a season to show Mother Nature who is most resilient! As runners, we're known to be among the morning “crazies” that populate the trails and bike paths even in the worst of weather, looking for that one day of edge ove...
