Serena Burla Previews The Boston Marathon Course
by Ron Wayne on February 6, 2013
Part of a runner's responsibility is to familiarize oneself with the race course. For Boston, many runners take a video preview by going on line. Most elite runners do practice runs on the course or take a driving tour. This past weekend Serena Burla, along with Coach Isaya Okwiya, flew up to Boston so Serena could drive on parts of the course and run on some of the more critical segments, such as the hills in Newton ("Heartbreak Hill"). Prior to the trip, Mizuno Territory Manager, Tina Danforth, provided Isaya with weather and course condition (snow, ice) updates. When the Boston Marathon race organizers learned that Serena was coming to Boston, they contacted TV Station WBZ (CBS affiliate) who will be televising the race nationally. WBZ sent a crew to follow Serena on the course.
Joining Serena (4th ranked US Woman Marathon Runner for 2012 by Track and Field News) in Boston this year will be Mizuno Racing Team Member Craig Leon. Both will be Boston first timers.
