Perspective in a Gym

by Clara Grandt January 23, 2013

Sometimes I think I know one of the biggest, but most obvious secrets to success- a will to work hard.  Since my injury this past fall, I started doing a lot of cross training in the gym and have continued to supplement my running with some cross training since then.  Runners are used to their gym being the great outdoors where hill climbing mode is built in with actual hills and accelerations occur naturally when crossing a major roadway, but I've found gyms with four walls have many things to offer as well.  One of my favorite things that the gym has to offer is&nb...

The Running Man

by Clara Grandt December 16, 2012

I see the same man running nearly every morning, whether I’m out there running myself or driving by, if I’m in that same spot at that same time, I will see him along the same stretch of road each morning.  He’s always running the same pace, the same time of day, and the same route.  His small build is slightly bent over, but not frail.  He’s probably in his 70’s, but who knows, maybe running is keeping him younger and he’s really 80’s or even 90 years old.  His outfit varies slightly depending on the season.  In the summer, ...

Calculating

by Clara Grandt November 29, 2012

While on training runs I have often found myself doing math.  I’ve been running competitively since seventh grade, and I’ve run a lot of miles since then.  In those miles I’ve done a lot of math.  Why have I done a lot of math while running?  Well, running actually involves a lot of numbers.  Distance and time are the things runners are always pushing against.  We are concerned with things that can all be calculated: distance, speed, acceleration. etc.Almost automatically during training runs I’ll start calculating distance comple...

Life in the Fast Lane

by Clara Grandt September 24, 2012

Recently I’ve been diagnosed with my first injury since 2005.  I started having pain in the bottom of my foot and after it didn’t go away, I got an MRI which revealed a partial tear in my plantar fascia.  I’ve been fortunate to have had such a long stretch of time without an injury, but it’s still a hard thing to swallow when it does happen.  However, I knew the best thing was to accept that athletes don’t go through careers without injuries, and take it as a blessing in disguise and do everything I could to use this time to heal and come back be...

Weather Advisory

by Clara Grandt August 21, 2012

Runners usually seem to know what’s happening with the weather as a lot of us seem to compulsively check weather statistics each day.  We can usually tell you the high and low temperatures, cloud coverage, humidity levels, and precipitation percentage.  This summer ‘s weather seems to have plenty of surprises in store, though.   I’ve found myself in some intense stormy weather, and it’s been causing quite interesting and adrenaline filled finishes to my runs!  The storms that have been blowing through have reminded me that there are things to...
