Mizuno Brand Ambassador Andrew McCutchen Recognized as Baseball America's Rookie of the Year
Pittsburgh Pirate center fielder Andrew McCutchen has been recognized by Baseball America magazine as their 2009 Rookie of the Year. After his call up from Triple-A Indianapolis on June 4th, McCutchen hit .286 with 12 home runs, 54 RBI, 26 doubles, 9 triples, and 22 stolen bases. He led all National League rookies with 47 extra base hits, ranked second in multi-hit games (36), runs (74), walks (54), and total bases (204), ranked third among NL rookies in RBI, stolen bases, slugging percentage (.471), and ranked fifth in batting average.
"There has been so much talk about Andrew, so much hype the last few years," said Pirates manager John Russell. "He had a lot of expectations to live up to, and he did. He got to the major leagues and was comfortable. You don't see that in every player who comes up from the minor leagues. That's what separates the really good players. Andrew is what out future is looking like in Pittsburgh."
"The only disappointing part of this season for me is that we lost so many games," said McCutchen. "That was tough and it kind of takes away from whatever personal things you might accomplish."
McCutchen was drafted in the first round of the 2005 MLB First Year Player Draft out of Fort Meade High School in Florida, with the 11th overall pick. He entered the 2009 season as the organization's no. 2
prospect according to Baseball America. He currently plays with the
Mizuno Techfire G3 Batting Gloves,
a Mizuno Pro Limited GMP70BK Ball Glove,
9-Spike Vapor Elite Mid G4 Cleats, and a
Mizuno Pro Maple Bat.
“Congratulations Andrew!”
